Jose L. Cardenas-Garcia, M.D., Lima, Peru
I visited the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in the Fall of 2008 as an observer in the Harrington Program through the International Medicine Institute. My term started with a rotation at the Coronary Care Unit, led by Dr. Urwa Barakat, Instructor of Medicine in the Cardiovascular Division and his excellent team of physicians. I was challenged on a daily basis and gained a lot of self confidence. Our team treated a woman with pericardial effusion and a rheumatologic condition. As a result, I have started to collaborate on a paper with Drs. Pedro Martinez Clark, Instructor of Medicine in the Cardiovascular Division, Elaine Tozman, Associate Professor of Rheumatology and Immunology and Fellow, Dr. Dylan Steen. My next observership was in the Cardiology Teaching Laboratory with Dr. Joseph Esterson, Director of the Cardiology Training Programs. Dr. Esterson clarified all doubts on EKGs and murmurs using Harvey, the cardiopulmonary patient simulator. All the conferences were presented by outstanding professors and at the end of the program I felt comfortable reading and interpreting EKGs. I also spent time in SICU and MICU with Drs. Daniel Kett, Professor of Medicine in Pulmonary and Critical Care and Andreas Schmid, Assistant Professor of Medicine in Pulmonary and Critical Care; they always listened to our questions and clarified all doubts.
Dr. Jorge Lascano, one of the fellows in the Pulmonary division, exemplified compassion. His example has helped me determine what path my clinical career will take after residency, he inspired me to specialize in clinical and research in Critical and Pulmonary Care. The Harrington Program is the best experience I have ever had, my heartfelt thanks to these amazing teachers and to the Harrington staff for their encouragement and support.
