Dr. Eduardo de Marchena is an internationally recognized cardiologist and a professor of medicine and surgery at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He was named Associate Dean for International Medicine Institute in March 2008 and has served as the Director of Interventional Cardiology, Medical Director of the Medical Director UHealth Atherosclerosis Prevention and Treatment Center, and is currently the Chairman of the University of Miami Medical Group. During his tenure at the University, Dr. Eduardo de Marchena has spearheaded key programs for the Heart Transplantation and Interventional Cardiology unit, has served as Chief of the Division of Cardiology and was appointed Interim Chairman of the Department of Medicine.

With more than 25 years of clinical experience in South Florida, he completed his undergraduate studies and his medical degree from the University of Miami School of Medicine and his residency at its affiliate institution, Jackson Memorial Hospital. Following his residency, he served as Chief Medical Resident in internal medicine, and received a fellowship in the Division of Cardiology.

As Dean of International Medicine, he leads the International Medicine Institute’s UHealth International, the International Education and Training Division and the International Research Division. UHealth International delivers quality healthcare to patients from all over the world. Through the International Education and Training Division, the University educates and trains medical students and physicians from Latin America, the Caribbean and has under his direction, extended its programs to the global community.  The Research Division partners with physicians, researchers and organizations to broaden the scope of research projects and clinical trials and is establishing new frontiers in the advancement of medical research and technology. 

In addition to his clinical, academic and leadership roles, his research in interventional cardiology, coronary artery disease, atherosclerosis and congestive heart failure has been widely published with over 200 publications and abstracts in journals including; New England Journal of Medicine, Circulation, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, American Heart Journal, Progress in Cardiology, and Journal of Vascular Surgery. He is the co-editor of the "Secrets in Interventional Cardiology" textbook.

Dr. de Marchena has been widely recognized for his clinical accomplishments as a four time recipient of the Best Cardiology Attending award presented by the University of Miami Cardiology Fellows (1988-2000) and he received the Martin H. Stein Memorial Award for Superior Performance as a cardiology fellow.

Active in the local community, Dr. Eduardo de Marchena has been recognized by the Cuban Medical Society, the American Heart Association and the Iron Arrow Honor Society for his contributions to the medical field. Additionally, he has been acknowledged several times by the Best Doctors in America.

As a researcher, his work has resulted in several patents and patent applications in percutaneous cardiovascular devices. His commitment to education is evident in the numerous medical education presentations, symposia and conference in all areas of Cardiology throughout the United States and Latin America.


Emilio M. Nuñez, M.B.A.

Mr. Nuñez has extensive years of professional experience in healthcare administration and health systems. Mr. Nuñez’ professional work experience includes domestic and international healthcare business development, hospital administration, managed care development and operations, and International Third Party Administrators.  Mr. Nuñez brings a strong background in strategic planning and management, marketing and business development. He received his Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Miami and a Master in Business Administration from Nova- Southeastern University. 


Jose Quesada, M.D., M.B.A.
Director of Finance and Operations
International Medicine Institute

Dr. Jose Quesada is the Director of Finance and Operations for the International Medicine Institute.  He received his medical degree from Carabobo University in Maracay, Venezuela and his MBA from IESA in Caracas, Venezuela.  He has held CEO and CFO positions with health care providers in Latin America and the Middle East. His comprehensive experience in Revenue Cycle Management and hospital financial planning combined with his hands-on knowledge of hospital management will enhance IHC’s focus on patient care.


Marco Flores, M.D. 
Business Development Manager
International Medicine Institute

Marco Flores, M.D. received his medical degree from the Universidad Mayor de San Andrés in Bolivia. Dr. Flores is an accomplished professional in many aspects of the healthcare industry.  In the insurance and reinsurance business, Dr. Flores has held positions including Director of International Contracts for USA Medical Services (now BUPA), Business Development Manager for Employers Reinsurance Corporation, Director of International Operations for Cyberknife Center in Miami and Executive Director of Amercon.  He currently holds a seat as a Florida Delegate in the American Medical Chamber of the Americas. Dr. Flores specializes in the implementation of major medical plans, network development and in the promotion and commercialization of medical systems in Latin America.


Jose A. Valdivia
Finance Manager
International Medicine Institute

Jose Valdivia has been in healthcare accounting and finance for over 20 years in South Florida.  For the last seven years he has served as the accountant for UHealth International. In this capacity he has developed accounting systems and processes to facilitate growth of UHealth International.  He is responsible for implementing numerous initiatives in the department’s financial//accounting requirements.  For 8 years Jose supervised cashiering and accounting operations for the Office of Medical Finance at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, with responsibilities for revenues in excess of $12 million.  He holds a Certificate in Business Applications in HealthCare from the University of Miami School of Business. His excellent interpersonal skills and multifunctional abilities are an asset to serving multi-cultural patients and visitors.


Maria C. Kesti
Development

Maria C. Kesti possesses over 25 years of experience in healthcare development and management.  Mrs. Kesti’s professional experience includes administration, marketing, public relations, promotions, program development, industry relations, patient services in various aspects of the markets including the insurance industry, hospitals, physician practices, rehabilitation and long-term care, as well as others.  In addition, she has specialized experience in philanthropic programs and events, donor relations, and fundraising.  Mrs. Kesti received her Bachelor of Science in Social Work from Florida State University.  She has been involved in various community organizations such as Rotary International and Cultural Council for over 14 years serving in various leadership roles.


 

Laz Gordon
Marketing and Communications

Laz received a Bachelor of Economics and International Studies from Florida International University and will complete a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies at the University of Miami in August, 2009.  Prior to joining the International Medicine Institute, Laz worked in the Department of Medicine coordinating faculty recruitment and seminars. She brings her creativity as an artist and her collective experience as a docent and events coordinator to the visionary efforts of the Institute where she develops culturally and linguistically competent promotional materials.  She also authors innovative communications including press releases, newsletters, announcements, brochures and presentations. 


 

Kenia Pineda
Accountant

Kenia worked with the University of Miami, Department of Pediatrics - WIC Office where she managed inventories and assisted with hiring, performance evaluations and training.  She transferred within the department to the Early Education Program as a Staff Accountant where she prepared all personnel documentation and maintained the program’s financial records.  In 2007, she joined the IMI team as a Staff Accountant II and is currently responsible for the review, reconciliation and accuracy of all expense accounts.  She serves as the liaison between the Institute and the University’s Department of Human Resources.  Kenia has an Associate in Arts degree and she is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration at University of Miami.
