Gustavo A. Godoy, M.B.A., C.R.A.

Mr. Godoy has a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and a Master in Management in Health Care Administration. Mr. Godoy is a Certified Research Administrator with over 30 publications to his credit. Mr. Godoy received the Hartford-Nicholson Award by the Society of Research Administrators for outstanding contribution, the highest honor given by the Society of Research Administrators to its Members. He retired from the Department of Veterans Affairs in March of 2007, where he served for almost 45 years. Mr. Godoy started as a Research Chemist and completed his career as the Founding Executive Director of the South Florida Veterans Affairs for Research and Education Foundation.

Leopoldo Raij, M.D.

Dr. Raij received his MD from Universidad Nacional del Litoral (UNL) in Argentina, and completed his internship and residency at University Hospital, UNL. Before coming to the University of Miami, he was Attending Physician and Professor of Medicine at the University of Minnesota Medical School, as well as the Chief of the Nephrology/Hypertension Section of the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Minneapolis. Currently, Dr. Raij is a Professor of Medicine, Director of the Hypertension Nephrology/Hypertension Division, and Vice Chair of the Vascular Biology Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine and as of June 2008 - Vice Chair of the Scientific Advisory Committee at the University of Miami Medical School.  He is also Chief of the Nephrology-Hypertension Section of the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Miami.

Dr. Raij has been a member of the Merit Review Board of the Veterans Administration, the Scientific Research Board of the American Society of Hypertension, the National Kidney Foundation Council on Hypertension, and the Scientific Advisory Board of the National Kidney Foundation.  He is a member of the editorial boards of Hypertension and Kidney International and is Associate Editor of the Journal of the American Society of Hypertension and was a member of the Executive Committee of the Council on the Kidney in Cardiovascular Disease of the American Heart Association from July 1994 to 1996.  Dr. Raij currently serves on the Board of Directors of the American Society of Hypertension and is CO-PI of the NIH funded, Miami component of the Hispanic Community Health Study.  He received the Lewis Dahl Award from the American Heart Association.  Dr. Raij has published over 180 articles in peer-reviewed publications. 



Juan Carlos Parodi, M.D.

Dr. Juan Carlos Parodi is a graduate of Universidad del Salvador in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Dr. Parodi is Board Certified in General and Vascular Surgery. He completed his post-doctoral training as Chief Resident in the Department of Vascular Surgery at Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Parodi described the first aortic endografting in 1990 and invented the Parodi Anti-embolic System for the safe treatment of extra cranial carotid artery disease with carotid stenting. Dr. Parodi is a world renowned surgeon lecturing throughout many countries globally.


In Memory of William Harrington, Jr., M.D.

William Harrington. Jr. M.D., a world-renowned expert physician-scientist in viral-induced malignant disease, died unexpectedly in January 2009.  His life and work continue to be an inspiration to those who worked alongside him. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Miami and was a Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology and Oncology.  Dr. Harrington initiated and maintained several NIH (RO1) funded collaborations with Latin American academic institutions involving clinical and basic research interactions focused on Epstein Barr Virus, Burkitts lymphoma and Human T Lymphotrophic Virus Type I associated Adult T Cell Leukemia.  He was principal investigator for the NCI AIDS Malignancy Consortium in Miami and co-directed the Harrington Medical Training Programs Programs for Latin America and the Caribbean. 



Irene Hung

Irene graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Latin American Studies from New York University. While studing at NYU, she completed a semester at Pontificia Universidad de la Católica de Chile.  Irene is currently pursuing a graduate-level certificate in Business Administration from the University of Miami. Prior to joining the IMI, she was a Finance Manager in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology and Vascular Biology Institute working in research administration and departmental administration.  She has also worked as a Program Coordinator at a non-profit organization working in the assessment and planning of HIV/AIDS services.  Irene joins the IMI in 2008 as a Project Manager.
