The faculty of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Miami, School of Medicine / Jackson Memorial Medical Center is focused and specializes in all aspects of research and care for those patients with tuberculosis. Drs. Ashkin and Narita, direct A.G. Holley State Hospital –the last of the original freestanding TB sanatoriums in the United States. This hospital admits the most difficult TB patient cases from the state of Florida and in this unique environment provides clinicians the challenging opportunity to treat TB patients from different perspectives. Approximately 40% of the patients are HIV infected and 10% of patients have multi-drug resistant TB. Most patients undergo pharmacokinetic monitoring for TB and HIV medications.
At present, A.G. Holley State Hospital is developing a "Mycobacterial Clinic" at Jackson Memorial Hospital in order to provide expertise to deal with tuberculosis as well as non-tuberculous mycobacteriosis. In addition to clinical and research activities, A.G. Holley also is a provider of clinical consultation and education to healthcare providers via its TB Hotline (1-800-4TB-INFO), Quarterly State of Florida TB/HIV Grand Rounds, and the week-long Comprehensive Clinical Tuberculosis Course.
